The above map was compiled and composited by Christopher Gauntt for the Summerville for Congress campaign using data provided by https://www.wedrawthelinesca.org. The new district borders were finalized on Dec 27th, 2021 as part of the redrawing of all districts resulting from the 2020 census findings.

Following are brief descriptions of the various cities and unincorporated communities within the 42nd CA Congressional District. The information was compiled from histories either provided by the city’s or area’s own websites, wikipedia, or other sources.
Visible on clear days from the mainland, Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island, which sits about 20 miles off the coast of Long Beach. Serious development of the city began in the early 20th Century when controlling interest in the island was purchased by chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley. Officially incorporated in 1913, it has been and continues to be a popular tourist destination for more than 100 years. Avalon boasts numerous hotels, restaurants, botanical gardens, a country club, golf course, beach club, and the Catalina Casino (which despite its name is a former dance hall, not a gambling establishment). The island is home to over 3,000 permanent residents.

The city of Bell was incorporated in 1927. The population is a little over 33,000. The borders of the city has an unusual shape as it has two districts connected by a narrow corridor. The smaller northern district is mainly industrial and is known as the Cheli area. The southern district is larger and is commonly referred to as Central City.

The city of Bell Gardens, the “hub of progress”, has a population of just over 39,000. It was incorporated in 1961 and offers beautiful parks, a sparkling lake, childcare centers, and a community golf course.

Founded in 1906, the community was originally called Firth, petitioned to be called Somerset, and eventually settled on Bellflower. However, it did not incorporate until 1957. Their motto is “Families. Businesses. Futures. Growing Together.” And they have a population of just over 79,000. From their origins as an agricultural Dutch enclave, Bellflower has transformed into a diverse city that is constantly seeking to innovate and reinvent itself to support its growing community.
The 42nd district covers nearly all of Bellflower, excepting a small south-west portion of it.
Commerce was incorporated in 1960 with the goal of creating a community that is both business and family friendly with a low tax structure. As such, it has become highly industrialized with most of its area dedicated to business and a residential population of just over 12,000. Despite its lower taxes, it manages to provide a high level of fire and police services to its businesses and residents as well as the Rosewood Park Community Center and Aquatorium.
The 42nd district covers all of Commerce.
The city of Cudahy’s motto is “open minds, open doors.” It was named for its founder, the meat-packing baron Michael Cudahy, who purchase the land in 1908. It was incorporated in 1960, and has a population of over 22,000.

The Downey area was named after John Gately Downey, an Irish immigrant that was drawn to California’s gold rush and went on become governor of the state. After his term as governor ended, he retired to Los Angeles and acquired a large cattle ranch that he turned into agricultural plots. Over time, this area transformed into what is now the city of Downey, which incorporated in 1956. Downey is known for its strong aviation industry and has a population of over 114,000.
The 42nd district covers nearly all of Downey, except a small north-east portion.
Also locally known as Florence-Firestone, the census area of Florence-Graham includes the separate unincorporated communities of Florence, Firestone park, Graham, and Nadeau. Combined, the population is just over 60,000.

Originally renamed in 1902 from “La Park” to “Huntington Park” to entice Henry Huntington to extend his Pacific Electric Railway through their development, Huntington Park incorporated in 1906. It has a population of just over 60,000 residents, the vast majority of which are Hispanic (96%) with the remaining residents being fairly evenly distributed among white, black, Asian and other groups. It is known for their more than 31 acres of total park space, which include playgrounds, facilities, picnic areas, and other amenities. Their motto is “the city of perfect balance.”

Lakewood became one of the original models of the modern suburb in post-World War II Southern California when it incorporated in 1954. It’s innovative “contract plan” for municipal services became a blueprint for other communities to follow. It’s motto is “Tomorrow’s City Today,” and it has a population of just over 82,000.
The 42nd district covers the eastern portion of Lakewood.
The beach-front city of Long Beach is the largest and most populous city in the 42nd District, with a population of over 466,000 people — the 7th largest in California and the 42nd largest in the nation. It is also the oldest incorporated city in the 42nd district, forming in 1897. The city is home to California State University, Long Beach, one of the nation’s top public universities; the Port of Long Beach, one of the busiest and cleanest ports in the Western Hemisphere; and the Long Beach Airport, one of the busiest regional and general aviation airports in the nation. Known as “The International City,” Long Beach is recognized globally for its dominant role as a U.S. maritime gateway in addition to being home to major manufacturing and high-tech industries. The city is also renowned as one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the nation, including one of the largest Cambodian communities outside of Cambodia. Long Beach is a major Southern California tourist destination and a regular shooting location for film and television, often serving as the double for oceanfront cities such as Miami.
The 42nd district covers the southern and eastern portions of Long Beach, including the Long Beach Airport and the Port of Long Beach.
The city of Maywood incorporated in 1924 and is focused primarily on being a family-oriented community. It has a long and proud tradition in its Parks and Recreation Department and has a population of over 25,000.

Located approximately 55 miles south of Long Beach is the Island of San Clemente. Since 1934, the island has been owned and operated by the U.S. Navy.

Located directly in the heart of, and surrounded completely by Long Beach, Signal Hill is a small town with a population of over 11,000 people. The city is well-known for its spectacular views of Cal State Long Beach, Downtown Long Beach, and the Pacific Ocean, as well as its rich history in oil exploration. The city incorporated in 1924 and elected Mrs. Jessie Nelson as mayor, making Signal Hill one of the very few cities to elect a woman for mayor in all of California during that time.

Vernon was founded in 1905 as an exclusively industrial city, the first of its kind in the Southwestern U.S. It is home to a wide span of industries including but not limited to agriculture, apparel, home furniture, plastics, and steel. Due to its focus on industry, the residential population is a mere 222 people according to the 2020 census (that’s not a typo), making it the second least populated incorporated city in all of California.
The 42nd district covers all of Vernon.
Walnut Park is an unincorporated census designated area that is adjacent to (but not part of) Huntington Park. It has a population of just over 15,000.
